yes, I fell completely off the grid for the month of April. But I had a good reason…..
April 1st I packed my youngest and my mother into the car and we hit the road. I had my camera in hand and I had a plan to capture some fantastic photos of the cherry blossoms in DC.
Since we already know my selfie game is strong I’ll post this one from the West Virginia welcome center. It was an easy drive and it was full of laughter!! Thursday morning we got up and visited with family and hit the road to DC. We toured the Kennedy Center, American History Museum and wrapped up the day with a trip to Georgetown Cupcakes. It was a very full day and we were all quite tired and hungry when we got back to my sister’s house. My mother went upstairs to change and when she came back down she did so head first. Not the way anyone wants to descend a staircase!! Things got very exciting then as 2 ambulances arrived and a helicopter was on standby…(there was a slight miscommunication between my brother in law and the 911 operator. In the heat of the moment 9 steps looks a lot like 30.
)
We arrived at the hospital and they took her off for x-rays and CT scans. They had taken off the neck brace before they wheeled her back sooooo this happened……..
I’m making that face because those things are wicked tight and it was very squeezey!! This is how my family deals with emergency situations. We use humor to deflect fear. It works for us. Anyway, I digress…. I took this picture while we were waiting on the Dr. to come back with the test results. I told her to look like she was in pain.
She had a pretty massive ‘closed head injury’ and a broken wrist, (we later found out it was like someone put all her wrist bones in a cup, shook it, and dumped them back out. LOTS of damage done) a few cuts and lots of really cool bruises. Since we were in the DC area we had to drive back to KY for a visit with the orthopaedic surgeon so our trip was cut short. Over the weekend bruises developed on a daily basis. It looked like I had pushed her down the stairs and she didn’t hesitate to tell everyone that I had. After seeing all the swelling that occurred in her head and face I’m really surprised she didn’t break any of the bones on her face.
Monday, April 6th my mother had surgery on her wrist to repair the damage. I spent the better part of April with her nursing her back to health, keeping her company, and opening containers for her. Even though it was a stressful month for her (and for me) we managed to make the best of the situation. We’ve bonded over what I refer to as “traumatic television”. Most people call this the TLC channel. I’ve watched multiple episodes of Hoarders, Extreme Couponing, Cheapskates, and my personal favorite……19 Kids and Counting. All of these shows give me great anxiety! I will probably need to see a therapist when it’s all over.
I’m always super grateful for my mother and everything she means to me. But this Mother’s Day I extremely glad that she is even here. That accident could have been much worse. I’m very thankful that she only broke her wrist. Bones heal, swelling goes down, bruises go away…..she’s alive and well, and that’s what is important! And look how cute she was with her blue cast!
Now that she’s on the mend I’m back to work!! I’m editing some images of 2 super cute kiddos this week that will hit the blog soon.
Enjoy your weekend! Happy Mother’s Day!
